ADVANCES IN WINTER MAINTENANCE TECHNIQUES
Developments in snow clearing and ice warning equipment designed to increase the efficiency of winter maintenance operations are examined. Developments in two-stage, cutter/blower, high-volume, snow clearing equipment is likely to result in larger vehicles with capacities of 10000 ton/hr and also 25000 ton/hr for specialised applications. As part of increasing the efficiency of ice prevention operations, ice early-warning systems (IEWS) have been developed to detect the formation of ice on roads, with data transmitted from ground probes via telephone network leased lines to a central control so providing a display of conditions at any given time. Development is being undertaken to interface the IEWS display with local weather forecasts to provide information on the possible risk of icy road conditions. (TRRL)
