ENERGY SAVING BY BETTER ROADS
ENERGIE EN TIJDSBESPARING DOOR BETERE WEGEN
The authors state that in the available literature too little is found on the efficiency of the investment of road construction for energy conservation. For the determination of the advantages which can be obtained by the removal of bottlenecks in the road network, a study is made of energy and cost saving investments in road construction. The most fundamental part of the study are the new calculation formulas for the determination of costs of fuel and exploitation according to specifications, by which special attention is given to fuel consumption at low speeds, for instance in queues. Secondly actualised calculations are made in six examples of possible investments in road construction in the form of cost benefit analyses. Investments for the modernization, renewal and extension of the road network are factors which can lead to energy savings. More savings can be obtained by an improvement of the traffic flow in urban areas. (TRRL)
