COSTS OF TIME LOSSES BY QUEUES FOR FREIGHT TRANSPORT

Time losses by queues are a main problem for private and freight transport. By inspection of diaries of 455 Netherlands freight transport drivers during a 10 day period, the number of queues were counted as well as the hour of the day, the location of the queue, the cause of the queue and the estimated waiting time in minutes. The total costs of journey time losses caused by queues (extra fuel costs and diversions included) was 40 million guilders for delivery vehicles, 17 million guilders for lorries and 55 million guilders for articulated vehicles and trucks. In total 112 million on the 1983 basis. Together with the 550 million guilders loss caused by queues for private transport in the journey to work and business traffic, it means a minimum loss of 660 million of social costs per year. Investment in new roads is seen as a good solution, because extra roads reduce queues. (TRRL)
