THE TRAFFIC CONFLICT TECHNIQUE OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

The development of tct (traffic conflict technique) started in 1973, was done by a group of traffic engineers and psychologists in Braunschweig (Erke, Gstalter, Schwerdtfeger, Zimolong), and was based on general definition and observation procedures following Perkins & Harris and Spicer. The observations that there are marked differences in behaviour (speed, acceleration, change in direction) and accidents (number, distribution, severity) between approaches and intersections led to the development of different types of observation. With these types of observation reliability and validity were sufficient. During the last years tct was applied to the evaluation of safety measures by different research groups.
