ST HELIER'S CAR PARK INFORMATION SYSTEM

A car park information system is usually thought of as one of the optional facilities within compact urban traffic control. However, a totally independent system has been installed in St Helier, Jersey, where there is considerable congestion in the narrow streets of the town during the summer period. The purpose of the system is to provide information to drivers about the availability of parking spaces in the town. By reducing the number of trips to full car parks, the intention is to maximise use of multi-storey car parks and make life easier for the motorist. Equipment for the system was developed in-house by the states' department of electronics. Its operation and the method of signing -slightly different from, but compatible with, that used in compact urban traffic control -is described, as are the problems and benefits of the system.
