A GENERAL CAPACITY FORMULA FOR AN UNCONTROLLED INTERSECTION

Standard formulae for the capacity of a minor intersection, crossing a major (priority) traffic stream, assume that the move-up time and acceptance gap of the minor vehicles are constants. This paper allows these times to have (almost) arbitrary distributions, and a general capacity formula is derived. In the case of exponential or regular-random headways on the major stream, the formula has a particularly simple form. This allows a sensitivity analysis to be performed on the standard assumptions of constant move-up time and acceptance gap. (TRRL)
