SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS FOR R.A.T.P. RAILWAY TUNNELS

The author discusses ways of improving tunnel safety, including the advisability of providing emergency exits for passengers haveing to evacuate trains. He stresses the need for close coordination between emergency services. The methods employed and the procedures followed hve been worked out by a standing committee of R.A.T.P. officials and Paris Fire Brigade (B.S.P.P.) representatives. Exercises are now carried out every year for staff training and to check that procedures are effective. Other safety measures include the removal of combustible materials from trains and the disconnection of the "communication cord" from the brakes.
