BALTIMORE: METROMANIA

The first year's operation of Baltimore's Metro rapid transit line is described. This covers a period when redership almost doubled to over 37,000 daily. The 7.5-mile route is now being extended 6 miles further into Baltimore County. Metro now has been thoroughly integrated with rerouted bus services, producing a quality and level of transit service which is steadily developing new patronage. Demographics of the area served and economic development coincident with Metro construction and operation are described. A downtown subway extension is now being planned and there is a widely held opinion that the greatest need is for continued expansion into a comprehensive rapid transit network.
