PUBLIC TRANSPORT SURVEYS: A NEW EFFECTIVE TECHNIQUE OF DATA COLLECTION
This article introduces a new method of data collection of potential value in public transport operations and planning. It is based on a self-completion questionnaire, where passengers answer questions by means of a simple "rub-off" process using either a coin or fingernail. The method was developed for a survey of bus passengers in Huddersfield undertaken in collaboration with the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive in September 1983. Coverage and response rates of over 90 per cent were recorded. The method is especially appropriate for use in all short-distance passenger surveys or where responses to all questions can be predetermined. (TRRL)
