TRAFFIC IN TORONTO, 1 - GENERAL OVERVIEW AND DEMAND FOR TRAVEL
This paper is the first of a series of 4 papers concerning the road traffic system in Toronto which has a basic road pattern in the form of a rectangular grid. The paper describes, using a continuous model, the general commuter traffic picture of Toronto and estimates the demand for travel in Toronto. The model assumes that homes and workplaces are distributed in a continuous fashion over the urban area and that vehicle routes follow a rectangular pattern. General traffic parameters for Toronto are derived. The spread of workplaces to homes was found to be almost equally interdispersed. This may have been caused by the motor box and grid system in Toronto, making the city radically different to European and Australian cities with their radial pattern of roads. (TRRL)
