CUBIC ELEMENT METHOD FOR HIGHWAY DESIGN

A new method is presented for the design of highway horizontal alignments. While it uses cubic parametric equations to give a line of gradually varying curvature through a series of location points it differs from the cubic spline method in that curvatures at the ends of an alignment and bearings and curvatures at location points are included in parameters defining the line. This gives the engineer more control over the design and allows direct tying in to existing alignments. The cubic element method is complementary to existing computer-aided design techniques. It is of particular use in the design of road improvements where new sections of route have to be tied in to existing alignments and in urban motorways where these pass through a tight corridor. Brief consideration is also given to other existing techniques for highway alignment such as the element method and the cubic spline method. (TRRL)
