TREATMENT OF THE DRINKING DRIVER

Examined the effect on the 2-yr driving record of drinking drivers referred by the courts to 6 programs for individual treatment. 2723 drivers treated were classified as light or heavy drinkers and compared with a no-treatment group similarly classified (n = 2127). Outcome criteria were (1) alcohol-related violations, (2) total moving violations, (3) alcohol-related accidents, and (4) total number of accidents. For light drinkers, 5 of the 6 countermeasures were significantly successful on at least 2 of the outcome measures, whereas 1 of them produced a significant decrease on all 4 criteria. Heavy drinkers apparently did not respond to treatment or had significantly worse records than those not treated. It is concluded that a variety of programs successfully treat the light drinker, but many existing programs result in worse records for the heavy drinker. (Author/TRRL)
