POINTERS ON VARIABLE MESSAGE TRAFFIC SIGNS

The author highlights some of the practical problems giving examples of the areas of uncertainty when deciding to use this special type of road sign. Variable message traffic signs (vmts) can be mechanical, manual, electrical or any combination of them. On most occasions, use is on an intermittent but regular basis, often used in association with the elements. A full evaluation of the objectives, economic factors and the site constraints should be conducted. Alternatives such as a fixed sign with supplementary plates should be considered. The consequences of a failure of the mains electricity must be determined. Sign-changing frequencies and the need for remote control should be investigated as should change-over times. The effect of sunlight and vandalism on the signs should be studied; maintenance needs should be ascertained. Future provisions should also be borne in mind -especially with car parks. Three simple rules are proposed: the site must be large enough for its sign, its operation, maintenance and safety; the sign must not obstruct visibility or pedestrians; normal practice in sign manuals must be followed.
