CONCRETE RUNWAY RECYCLED AS ASPHALT RUNWAY
Recycling of old concrete pavements and asphalt overlays is the key to a rapid runway reconstruction project now underway in Oklahoma City. The concrete slabs are broken, crushed and reused as aggregate in the asphalt pavement for the reconstructed runway. The project involves the reconstruction or resurfacing of a 7,000 ft. crosswind runway and construction of an 800 ft. extension at one end. The northerly end of the 150-ft.-wide runway receives a 17-in. asphalt overlay while the southerly half is removed, recycled and replaced by a 27-in. asphaltic concrete pavement.
