LAUNCHED BRIDGES TURN A CORNER
An international group of design and construction firms is completing the first incrementally launched bridges to carry spirally aligned roadways. The bridges are part of a 1.8-mile stretch of a six-lane New Territories highway in Hong Kong. Four of the crossings consist of twinned concrete box-girder viaducts. By shifting the box sections of the bridges in relation to the decks, the bridges' designers and builders were able to push structures along circular arcs over two crossings, even though the road alignments trace spirals.
