REPAIRING NEW YORK'S HISTORIC BRIDGES

The repairs that were made to dress up the Brooklyn Bridge for its widely publicized 100th birthday party last year were relatively minor. The real work has just begun. The anchorages, suspenders and stay cables, however, must be dealt with and the pedestrian promenade completely rebuilt. Inspecting the anchorages is the next step, and it will not be an easy task. The main cables branch out into 19 eyebar anchorages. Moving the splay castings - the clamps where the main cables separate - is another task that must be done before the anchorages can be inspected. Another part of the current contract is providing temporary support at the top of the towers for the overfloor stays.
