An apparatus for the determination of the frost susceptibility of soils has been tested regarding sample preparation technique, repeatability of freezing tests and reliability. Sample preparation: freezing tests were performed considering the effects of (a) packing method used, (b) preconsolidation or not and (c) storing time, on the freezing behaviour of the soils tested. Repeatability was studied for different soils by repeated freeze-thaw cycles on one sample. Reliability was studied by freezing the same soil with different types of equipment in different laboratories. A great number of freezing tests are reported. (Author/TRRL)
