SOBRIETY CHECKPOINTS

In Maryland, many improvements have been made in the state's efforts to combat the drunk driving problem and one of the enforcement programs has been sobriety checkpoints. This article attempts to answer some of the many questions that have arisen over this use of the checkpoint enforcement strategy. Among these questions are the following: Is the drunk driving problem serious enough to justify the use of sobriety checkpoints? Does the sobriety checkpoint strategy work? Are attitudes about drunk driving changing? What is the current status of court cases involving the use of checkpoints? Does the use of this enforcement technique have value over a longer period of time, after the public becomes accustomed to its use?
