TESTS TO VALIDATE CENTRIFUGE MODELLING OF FLEXIBLE PIPES

In order to compare the results obtained from model tests on buried flexible pipes, using the Cambridge geotechnical centrifuge, with a full-scale prototype, a 1 m diameter steel pipe was subjected to loading tests while buried in dry sand in the Transport and Road Research Laboratory test pit. A geometrically similar model pipe was subjected to similar loading using the centrifuge, installed in the same sand at the same density. The strain distributions, maximum sustainable loads, and the final deflected shape of the pipe predicted by the model tests showed good agreement with the behaviour of the full-scale prototype.
