SUB-SURFACE INVESTIGATION FOR SHALLOW MINE WORKINGS AND CAVITIES BY THE GROUND IMPULSE RADAR TECHNIQUE
This article reports some successful attempts in the use of ground impulse radar techniques to locate buried structures. These include backfilled shafts, buried brickwork, and an abandoned air ventilation shaft. An experiment in the detection of subsurface cavities is also described. It is shown that although radar penetration is limited by the physical nature of the site, there are many areas in the UK where conditions are satisfactory for 1-10 m deep investigations. (TRRL)
