TIME FOR A CORDLESS TYRE REVOLUTION

This paper reviews the development of cordless rubber tyres from tyres manufactured in the USA by Firestone in 1970, through the dip (development integrated project) tyre manufactured by Pirelli in 1973, Goodyear's cordless polyurethane tyres, and Polyair's lim (liquid injection moulded) tyres. The manufacturing process of polyurethane lim tyres for off-highway use and for passenger cars is described. Those tyres have been tested for traction on wet roads, fuel consumption, tread abrasion, heat build up, handling and general road behaviour. The results of the tests are mentioned and discussed.
