DYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF TYRES

The tyre has a major influence on the handling and stability performance of automobiles, yet there is little published information on the dynamic properties of the tyre other than the lateral force response to cyclic steer. This paper gives experimental data on the dynamic behaviour of the forces and moments developed at the tyre contact patch using a machine capable of applying cyclic slip, camber, lateral and vertical motions to a free-rolling tyre. The results are presented in terms of complex transfer functions. The influence of speed and gyroscopic couples is shown to be of significant importance under the action of changes in camber. A categorization of importance of the various forces and moments is produced to indicate the order in which improvements can be made to mathematical simulations of automobile handling.
