A MOTORWAY TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM
A traffic surveillance and control system, in operation along 200 kilometres of the Netherlands' busiest motorways, makes use of optical displays mounted on gantries over the roads, and inductive sensors embedded in the road surface. Optional sensors can be added for ice and fog detection. Sensor output is fed to computers which are controlled by algorithms to produce instructions shown on the overhead displays. The algorithms are continuously updated. The system, which allows different degrees of automation, uses telecommunication and telemetry techniques only recently made possible by developments in micro-electronics. (Author/TRRL)
