KEEPING RAT-RUN TRAFFIC AWAY FROM RURAL ROADS
HET WERAN VAN SLUIPVERKEER OP PLATTELANDSWEGEN
A statement is made on the policy of fighting rat-run traffic and a definition and description of causes and effects are given. The authors specify various counter-measures both in the field of traffic engineering and by erecting traffic signs. A study project shows that the latter is quite cheap and very successful if a certain level of enforcement can be maintained (rat-run traffic decreases by 80 to 95%). Where alternative roads are available enforcement is not really necessary. (TRRL)
