EFFECT OF CHEMICAL ADMIXTURES ON THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS OF LIME- AND FLYASH- STABILISED SHALES

Eight shales representing regional characteristics but differing texturally and mineralogically were selected from different parts of Oklahoma, US for testing. Dry and immersed strengths of all selected shales stabilised with lime and flyash and also with various chemical admixtures and cured for 28 days were determined. The results indicated that admixtures are beneficial for all stabilised shales having comparatively lower plasticity values. Admixtures were found not to be beneficial for shales containing very small amounts of fine fractions (2 micron particles). The binding effect provided by admixtures was comparatively less owing to the existence of lower amount of fine fractions. For highly plastic shales admixtures were not beneficial because of the presence of excess amount of water especially in the immersed condition. However, admixtures added after lime and flyash stabilisation enhanced the immersed strengths of all predominently illitic shales displaying comparatively higher frictional values. Dry strengths of montmorillonitic shales increase considerably in presence of sodium hydroxide. (Author/TRRL)
