CHARACTERISTICS OF TRAFFIC ON KUWAIT RING ROADS
The stimulus to Kuwait over the past 30 years provided by massive oil revenues of Kuwait resulted in a very rapid rate of growth in population and economy. This led to a large expansion of car ownership level which reached 0.420 vehicles per person in 1981 compared to only 0.165 vehicles per person in 1964. The need for more roads became greater and the total length of paved roads amounted to 2800 kilometres in 1981. An extensive study of road transport in Kuwait identified the ring roads as the dominant part of urban highway network of the country. This note presents the results of a study on the characteristics of traffic on these ring roads, including traffic flow, journey speeds and delays and traffic accidents. (Author/TRRL)
