STABILITY AND SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS FOR THE GENERAL NETWORK EQUILIBRIUM-TRAVEL CHOICE MODEL
We consider the combined asymmetric network equilibrium problem where the travel demand function may depend upon the travel cost and we introduce a new link formulation for this problem which has the desirable feature that uses directly the travel demand function (and not its inverse). Assuming that the travel cost and demand functions are monotone we first show that the equilibrium travel pattern depends continuously upon the travel cost and demand functions. We then focus on the delicate question of predicting the direction of the change of the travel pattern and the incurred travel costs and travel demands from changes in the travel cost and demand functions and attempt to elucidate certain counter intuitive phenomena such as "braess paradox". Our analysis depends crucially on the fact that the governing equilibrium conditions can be formulated as a variational inequality. (Author/TRRL)
