THEORETICAL DETERMINATION OF THE MAXIMUM BENDING STRENGTH IN THE CAR BODY COMPONENTS

The paper presents a simple, approximate method of predicting the maximum bending strength of car body pillars, where the actual section is approximated by a closed or open rectangular shape. The calculation is carried out on the rectangular section, allowing for the material properties and stability conditions of the section walls. Experimental evidence obtained on several pillar sections taken from four mass-produced cars, has confirmed the applicability of the method in the early design/analysis stages of a car body.
