TWISTING COLLAPSE OF OPEN SECTIONS

The collapse mode of open sections is shown to be dependent on the positioning of the applied loads relative to the cross section. Torsion-warping theory provides methods for forecasting behaviour. The shape and magnitude of the energy absorption characteristics are strongly influenced by the collapse mode and the performance may be improved by triggering the mode by appropriate detail design, particularly in relation to the load connection path.
