LIGHT RAIL GAINS NEW MOMENTUM

Light rail, evolutionary development of the traditional streetcar, is gaining acceptance in North American cities, most of which abandoned their street railway systems between 1930 and 1950. The concept is marked by system simplicity, flexibility and low cost. Light rail is attractive for its reduction of urban congestion and stimulation of urban development. Some 25 corridors in the U.S. and Canada have or plan to introduce light rail. Descriptions are given of 3 of these--San Diego, CA; Portland, OR; and San Jose, CA.
