DRINKING DRIVERS AND ALCOHOLICS: ARE THEY FROM THE SAME POPULATION
This paper investigates the question of whether or not drinking drivers and alcoholics are from the same population by examining a range of epidemiological research published from 1950 to 1981 on the relationship between alcoholics and drinking drivers. The initial focus is on methodological considerations that may affect the validity and reliability of studies both similar and different in design. This is followed by a review of the relevant literature and the conclusions that seem warranted on the basis of the review. In conclusion, this review suggests that alcoholics and drinking drivers are not the same population. Furthermore, the review strongly suggests that drinking-driving violations and collisions may be one of the early predictors of alcoholism.
