VIENNA'S CENTRAL TRAIN STATION--MAJOR CONSTRUCTION SITE FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT

BAHNHOF WIEN MITTE--GROBBAUSTELLE FUR DEN NAHVERKEHR

By 1982 three Vienna U-Bahn lines (U1, U2 and U4) were in operation. Lines U3 and U5 have been under construction since 1984. In the central railroad station the U3 line had to be built under the 2-minute headway rapid transit rail line and the 11-m deep U4 line. A special construction method was necessary due to the presence of a maintenance building adjacent to the central station, a department store requiring shoring, as well as generally high ground water. The pre-stressed over street bridge had to be dismantled due to poor vibration resistance. The sequence of construction events is described.
