ANSALDO'S MODULAR METRO IN GENOA

Anslado Transporti is developing a new concept for an off-the-shelf metro system in Genoa where an 8 km line equipped with 11 stations is based on a wide range of modular components presented in a catalogue form. The question of a metro for the 750000 inhabitants is difficult because the geography of the area is such that they are crammed into a coastal strip hemmed in by mountains and into two cleft valleys. The streets are too narrow for a tramway, but a number of existing tunnels for road traffic are being utilised by the metro. Prototype chopper-controlled cars are based upon the Zurich tram 2000, but production cars will be longer and have aluminium bodies instead of steel. There will be room for 144 standing passengers giving a vehicle capacity of 222 allowing a maximum of 24000 passengers per hour to be carried in each direction. The automatic control system will be similar to that used in Lille. It is planned to make as inventory of all the service functions to be centralised and remote controlled and to standardise all of them using common data transmission and telephone lines and common VDUS.
