PROTECTION AGAINST STRAY CURRENTS ON METROPOLITAN LINES

PROTEZIONE CONTRO LE CORRENTI VAGANTI NELLE LINEE METROPOLITANE

This article reviews a document recently published by the CEI (Italian Electotechnical Committee) entitled "Standards for earthing systems for metropolitan railways". The document pertains to measures to be adopted for reducing the dangerous effects of stray or dispersed currents internal or external to engineering structures (tunnels, viaducts etc) carrying the metropolitan lines. Three dangerous situations are considered: (1) stray currents inside structures (e.g. Tunnels) due to internal surges, such as from the traction line itself; (2) stray currents inside structures caused by external surges, from other train or tram lines in close proximity; and (3) stray currents outside structures caused by internal surges. The first two cases involve the safety of people (passengers and service personnel exposed to dangerous voltages) as well as the stability and safety of the structure carrying the line. The third case concerns the dangers caused by the operation of the line to adjacent structures or metal conductors, or other underground services such as gas or water. (TRRL)
