PARIS TABLES INNOVATION STRATEGY

With radial travel needs well served by Paris Metro's transit and commuter rail services (ridership is up 36 percent in 10 years) attention is now turning to suburb-to-suburb corridors with private rights-of-way set aside for streetcars or other modes. While the Paris city center is easy to reach, it is awkward to move from one suburb to another. A light rail line has been authorized for a 9.1-km route in the northeast of the city. The 22 stations include interchanges with 3 of the Paris Metro radial lines and with a suburban service of French National Railways. Twenty 2-car articulated light rail vehicles will be built and service is scheduled to start in 1988. At least 3 other suburb-to-suburb lines are being planned with modes not yet chosen. In the center city an Aramis people-mover system is being planned to cover 28-km of routes using 10-passenger vehicles on elevated, at-grade and tunnel guideways. Other details of RATP's rolling stock and control systems are described.
