THE MEXICO CITY METRO

Sistema de Transporte Colectivo, Mexico City Metro, has expanded constantly from the opening of its first 8-mile line in 1969. Using the French technology of rubber-tire trains, the 6 lines now move 3 million riders on an average day with a fleet of 1,350 cars. STC has become more sophisticated as it has expanded with a computer operated automatic train control (AP) system now effective on all lines. Headway on the busiest routes is 115 sec at peak periods. The AP computer controls all train starting and braking, maximum speed, and door-opening; train schedules are stored and any deviations are automatically compensated if possible without intervention. Crowd control presents special problems for Metro police at busier stations. The Metro fare of 1 peso, unchanged since 1969, is expected to rise since it is estimated that operation costs up to 30 pesos per passenger.
