CONCRETE TIE TRACK SYSTEM

In this paper the concrete tie track system is reviewed, with emphasis on the interrelationship of mechanical equipment with management of the track system. The research described in this paper is directed to the use of the concrete tie track system on North American freight railroads, with comments on the environment that justify its use. The concrete tie is reviewed relative to specifications, design parameters, production, quality control of materials and finished product, and procurement methods. Design considerations of the fastening system are discussed together with requirements for rail and ballast. Comments are also made with reference to mechanical equipment design. Field performance of the concrete tie track system is reviewed with comments on track and train dynamics; fuel savings; maintenance; electrical properties; rail life, renewal, and corrugation; tie cracking; and damage. A brief overview of three concrete tie installation methods is given together with coments on future developments of the system. Also, reference is made to international publications and research reports.
