STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF DIESEL PARTICLE SIZE AND SHAPE BY DIGITAL PICTURE PROCESSING METHOD

Because of their complicated shape, it is difficult to evaluate the range of representative diameters of diesel particles by means of ordinary classification methods used for spherical particles. A digital picture processing method was introduced for the statistical analysis of diesel particles' size and shape, in which the particle image observed by means of an electron microscope is processed and analyzed by computer. By this method, it was found that the particle size distribution can be expressed as log-normal, and it is possible to analyze statistically diesel particle size and shape using the following parameters, the diameter of circle equivalent to particle projected area for the particle size and the irregularity factor and anisometry factor for the particle shape.
