A CONTRIBUTION TO THE EVALUATION OF SKIDDING RESISTANCE
CONTRIBUTO ALLA VALUTAZIONE DELLA SCIVOLOSITA STRADALE
This article deals with the role of the engineer with regard to the problem of skidding resistance, and identifies three primary parameters: (1) the design of the road axes and cross section; (2) the design of the pavement with particular reference to the wearing course; and (3) the monitoring and maintenance of the road surface. The first point is allied to driving behaviour and the requirements for stability and adhesion. Points 2 and 3 create the conditions in which adhesion is provided, optimized in terms of traffic and weather considerations. Here also is included the preservation and maintenance of good adhesion qualities over time. (TRRL)
