LAND SURFACE EVALUATION FOR ENGINEERING PRACTICE: APPLICATIONS OF AUSTRALIAN PUCE SYSTEM FOR TERRAIN ANALYSIS
Terrain is classified on the basis of characteristics such as the engineering properties of the underlying soil and rock, the slope of the land and its vegetation. It can then be mapped, described, evaluated, and assessed for different purposes at increasing levels of detail in terms of areas known as provinces, terrain patterns, terrain units, and terrain components. The main method of terrain analysis specifically related to civil engineering purposes currently being implemented in Australia, the Puce system, is explained briefly and examples cited to illustrate its development and scope. A complete bibliography is also included. This brief review supplements the working party report on land surface evaluation for engineering practice by outlining the main Australian developments and experience in this field. (Author/TRRL)
