FAST WORK ON M6 CROSSOVER
FAST WORK ON M6 CROSSOVER
The author describes the steps leading up to and the action taken in the setting up of a contra-flow system over a weekend to free a 5 km length of hardshoulder and two adjacent lanes of motorway for remedial work. A full contra-flow system on one carriageway was impractical and so heavy goods vehicles were channelled into the offside lane whilst cars and light commercials were diverted through a wide crossover into the offside lane of the opposing carriageway. The most hazardous part of the operation was the closing off of the offside lanes to construct the crossover and the process of temporarily diverting all southbound vehicles onto the hard shoulder whilst the contra-flow was marked out. Because self adhesive white arrows have to be laid in the opposite lane under traffic with minimum protection, the quietest time was chosen - usually at night. Problems were caused by an incomplete sign and a missing lighting tower at a crossover point. However, replacements were found and the contra-flow opened six hours late at 1 pm one Sunday. (TRRL)
