KEEPING AN EYE ON HIGH-SPEED TRAFFIC

Closed circuit television cameras are being used to monitor and control movement of traffic along London's orbital motorway the M25. Two tunnels carrying high speed traffic have created a greater risk to road safety. The monitoring system, housed in a police control room in Essex, uses 42 cameras along the route from the dartford tunnel to the a1 at potters bar. A central control map shows the status of the cameras with an override facility to allow the controllers to switch all 20 monitors into any of the two motorway tunnels, each fitted with four pairs of cameras on each carriageway. Data are fed to the control room from the cameras by 19 km of fibre optic cable, and video signals from the cameras in the tunnel can be viewed simultaneously or selected for a full scan display. All cameras have full pan and tilt facilities which can be individually activated as required at the control room using a pre-programmed position selector. Cameras are mounted on high masts at tunnel entrances and interchanges to ensure good visibility. (TRRL)
