THE EFFECTS ON ROADS OF HEAVY FREIGHT TRANSPORT VEHICLES
In this study an attempt is made to formulate a technico-economic model to represent the overall system of technical, economic and regional policy interactions, with reference to heavy vehicles on roads. The model is intended to correlate and optimize the three reference parameters of the system: (a) the characteristics of the vehicles; (b) the efficacy of the transport system in terms of cost and consumption; and (c) the external effects on road pavements, on the environment, and on safety. The article comprises ten chapters: (1) guidelines for a heavy vehicle road transport policy; (2) considerations on the current importance of heavy road vehicles for the transport of freight; (3) the effects on road traffic; (4) the effects of heavy vehicle traffic on safety; (5) the effects on road pavements; (6) the effects on infrastructure; (7) some ecological considerations; (8) vehicle operating methods and energy aspects; (9) evaluation of the economic costs connected with heavy vehicle traffic; and (10) considerations on the state of research into the analysis of the road freight transport system.
