SURFACE ULTRASONIC MEASUREMENT OF TRANSVERSE WAVE VELOCITIES THROUGH ROCK SAMPLES

Measurements made using a portable ultrasonic non-destructive digital indicating tester (pundit) on cylindrical chalk samples and on a chalk block are described. The authors conclude that the surface ultrasonic pulse method is a viable adjunct to the standard direct method of measuring the velocity of compressional and shear wave events through rock samples when the effects of in situ stress are of minor importance. It is particularly recommended for testing of weaker rock types which could deteriorate with saturation or high stress levels. Cylindrical rock samples and rectangular blocks of rock of virtually any size can be tested, as long as transducers of suitable resonant frequency are available. Limitations of the method are discussed. (TRRL)
