EXAMINATION OF ROAD DAMAGES ON NATIONAL HIGHWAY 86

The paper relates to the investigation into and the evaluation of the present state of a 50 km long alignment of the National Highway 86 in northern Sweden, which was rebuilt during 1973-1981. Soils dominating are clay, silt, silty moraines and boulder clay. The improvement has not fulfilled expectations. The road is deteriorating much faster than it should. The road was surveyed in its full length and damages, riding comfort, etc., were registered. Four places of interest were selected: two embankments and two cuts: Oestloning, Flygge, Liden and Sillre. Test methods are described. 140000 metric tons of timber are carried annually in the south-bound lane. Nevertheless both lanes are equally worn. The alignment along the river causes the embankments to be higher and, thus, wider on the south-lane side, though decreasing the load per unit area of the superstructure does not seem to be under-dimensioned. In conclusion one might say that the unique geology of the valley is the main reason for the fast deterioration. (TRRL)
