PRIVATE CARS SKIDDING ON ICY ROADS - WINTER 1982/1983

SLADD MED PERSONBIL. VINTERN 1982/1983

The report presents the characteristics of fatal accidents on roads covered with ice or snow as reported by the police to the Swedish Road Safety Office and results from a mail survey among a random sample of 1700 Swedish drivers concerning their driving experience during the winter of 1982/1983. Almost 50 percent of all fatal single vehicle accidents and head-on collisions involving private cars in Sweden occur on roads covered with ice or snow. About 50 percent of all accidents of these types during the winter season of 1982/1983 were initiated by the skidding of a private car. The results show that the number of fatal single vehicle accidents varies with the amount of snow covering the roadsides, i.e. less single vehicle accidents are fatal when the snow cover is thick. The mail survey shows that 50 percent of those driving during the winter of 1982/1983 had experienced at least one occurrence of skidding and 16 percent reported that they had completely lost control of the car. Causes of skidding frequently reported were snowfalls and bands of snow between the lanes on the road. Few of the fatal accidents were reported having taken place under such circumstances, probably due to lower speeds. Eighty percent of the drivers aged 18-24 compared to 20 percent of the drivers aged 65-74 reported skidding. More males than females reported skidding. Drivers of front wheel drive cars reported a lower percentage of skidding than those driving rear wheel drive cars. Drivers also seemed to benefit from using studded winter tyres. (Author/TRRL)
