TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORT IN ISRAEL

VERKEER EN VERVOER IN ISRAEL

The author gives a report of a visit to Israel paying special attention to the role of the police in Israel. The road network has not been developed to keep pace with the increase in vehicle ownership. Because police control and enforcement is not sufficient, automatic traffic signal lighting is not uniform and there is a lack of parking places. Public transport has been promoted so as to decrease the use of the private car. The number of fatal accidents is increasing. In 1983 there were 436 traffic victims, compared with 339 in 1982. Traffic education of the children is given by the police in a traffic garden (training area). (TRRL)
