THE INFLUENCE OF LACK OF SPACE ON CAR OWNERSHIP AND CAR USAGE IN TWO AMSTERDAM DISTRICTS

INVLOED RUIMTEGEBREK OP AUTOBEZIT EN AUTOGEBRUIK IN TWEE AMSTERDAMSE WIJKEN

Old districts in major cities are characterized by intensive land use. They were built when car ownership and car usage were of limited importance. In the present situation space which was originally used by pedestrians, cyclists and playing children is taken by cars. Up to now there has been a lack of understanding of the relation that could be established between lack of space and the role of the motor car. For a study two districts in Amsterdam were chosen where physical and socio-economic characteristics are different. It appears that intensive land use plus the presence of many provisions within the district lead to less car usage. On the other hand this influence is lessened by the fact that only a part of all trips have their destination within the district. No doubt there should be a general influence on town planning policy as to the creation of spatial conditions and the influence on the composition of the population in individual districts. (TRRL)
