THE SHARED VEHICLE FLEET--A STUDY OF ITS IMPACT UPON ACCESSIBILITY AND VEHICLE OWNERSHIP

The results presented in this paper suggest that the introduction of a shared fleet arrangement will significantly affect a household's level of ownership. Overall, the presence of a shared fleet increased a household's choice set accessibility by 47% and decreased expected vehicle ownership by 25%. The largest accessibility gains were experienced by lower income households, condominium dwellers, small households, and households with no full time workers. The impact of enhanced accesibility upon choice set probabilities indicates that a shared fleet benefits single-vehicle households the most, decreasing the probability of owning one vehicle by between 32% and 41%. Thus, the preliminary conclusion of this analysis is that the introduction of a shared fleet arrangement will compete most effectively with single vehicle households and has the potential to influence significantly all household decisions in vehicle ownership.
