RAPID TESTING FOR COMPACTION CONTROL

Traditional methods for compaction control of earth fills involve testing the fill's dry density to check that it is not less than a specified proportion of the maximum dry density achievable for that soil in a standard laboratory compaction procedure. Typically there can be delays of up to 24 hours in obtaining results because of the time required to oven-dry the soil and determine water content. However, such delays are unacceptable if construction is to be properly controlled, as defective work may in the meantime be buried beneath subsequent filling. (Author/TRRL)
